Exam Writing Skills

The Grade 9 language exam typically includes comprehension, summary writing, and language in context. Success requires a combination of reading skills, grammar knowledge, and the ability to express yourself clearly under timed conditions.
Example

Summary Writing Technique

Steps for writing a summary: 1. Read the text carefully and identify the main points. 2. List 7–8 key ideas (one per line). 3. Cross out any repeated or minor points. 4. Write the summary in your own words as one paragraph. 5. Count your words — stay within the word limit. 6. Do not include your own opinion or examples not in the text.
Note

Time Management

Allocate time according to marks. For a 2-hour paper: • Comprehension (30 marks): ~50 minutes • Summary (10 marks): ~20 minutes • Language (30 marks): ~40 minutes • Review: ~10 minutes Never leave a question blank — attempt every question for partial marks.
