Comparing Themes Across Texts

In Grade 9, you are expected to compare themes across different literary texts — novels, short stories, poems, and plays. This requires identifying common themes (such as identity, justice, love, or loss) and discussing how different authors explore them through different genres and techniques.
Example

Comparative Analysis

Theme: 'Overcoming adversity' Novel: The protagonist faces poverty but perseveres through education. Poem: The speaker describes a difficult journey as a metaphor for life's challenges. Comparison: Both texts show that determination leads to triumph, but the novel uses realistic events while the poem uses symbolism and imagery.
Note

Writing a Comparative Essay

Structure: Introduction (name the texts and the shared theme) → Body paragraphs comparing how each text explores the theme → Conclusion summarising similarities and differences. Use linking phrases: 'Similarly...', 'In contrast...', 'Both texts...', 'While [Text A]... [Text B]...'. Always support points with quotes from both texts.
