Visual Literacy
Analyse cartoons, advertisements, film posters
Analysing Visual Texts
In Grade 8, you analyse more complex visual texts: editorial cartoons, film posters, and multi-modal advertisements. You must identify visual techniques (colour, layout, facial expressions, body language) and verbal techniques (slogans, puns, rhetorical questions) and explain their combined effect.
Example
Film Poster Analysis
A poster shows a character standing alone in a dark alley with a single light above.
Visual techniques: Dark colours create a tense, mysterious mood. The character's isolation suggests loneliness or danger. The light symbolises hope or truth.
Verbal element: 'The truth is closer than you think' — creates suspense.
Target audience: Teenagers who enjoy mystery/thriller films.
Note
Answering Visual Literacy Questions
Describe what you see, then interpret its meaning. Link visual and verbal elements together. Explain the purpose and target audience. Use terms like 'suggests', 'implies', 'creates the impression that'. Always refer specifically to the visual text in your answer.
