Unprepared reading and prepared speeches

Oral Assessment Tasks

Grade 8 oral assessment includes unprepared reading (reading a text aloud for the first time) and prepared speeches (researching and presenting a topic). Both assess your pronunciation, fluency, expression, and ability to engage an audience.
Example

Prepared Speech Structure

Topic: 'Social media: help or harm?' Introduction: 'Good morning, fellow learners. Today I will argue that social media does more harm than good for teenagers.' Body: Present 3 arguments with examples. Conclusion: 'In conclusion, while social media connects us, its negative effects on mental health and academic performance outweigh the benefits.' Time: 2–3 minutes.
Note

Assessment Criteria

You are assessed on: • Content (is it relevant, well-researched?) • Delivery (eye contact, posture, gestures) • Language (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation) • Fluency (smooth delivery, appropriate pace) • Impact (does it engage the audience?) Practise in front of a mirror or record yourself.
