Poetry Analysis

Analysing Poetry Techniques

In Grade 8, poetry analysis becomes more detailed. You must identify techniques such as imagery, symbolism, irony, and enjambment, and explain their effect. You should also discuss the poem's structure (rhyme scheme, stanza form) and how it contributes to meaning.
Example

Analysing a Stanza

'The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still' (from Maya Angelou) Imagery: 'fearful trill' — we hear the bird's desperate song. Symbolism: The caged bird represents people denied freedom. Emotion: 'longed for still' expresses a deep desire for what is out of reach. The short lines create a sense of confinement.
Note

Poetry Response Structure

For exam answers on poetry: 1. Name the device or technique. 2. Quote the relevant line(s) with quotation marks. 3. Explain the effect — how does it contribute to the poem's meaning, mood, or theme? Avoid simply naming devices without explaining their effect.

Key Vocabulary

EnjambmentWhen a sentence runs over from one line to the next without a pause
IronyWhen the opposite of what is expected happens or is meant
Rhyme schemeThe pattern of rhyming words at the end of lines (e.g. ABAB)
SymbolismUsing something concrete to represent an abstract idea
