Recording, mixing and digital music production

Music Production and Technology

Modern music is often created using technology. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) let you record, edit and mix music on a computer. Producers use synthesizers, samplers and effects to create sounds. SA's amapiano genre was largely born in bedroom studios using affordable technology.
Example

Music Technology Basics

• DAW: software for recording/producing (FL Studio, GarageBand) • Microphone: captures sound for recording • MIDI: lets computers communicate with instruments • Mixing: balancing levels, panning, EQ of different tracks • Mastering: final polish to make a song ready for release Many SA producers started with free or cheap software and built their careers!
Note

Remember

Technology makes music production accessible — you can create professional-sounding music at home. However, technology is a TOOL — you still need musical creativity, an understanding of melody, rhythm and harmony. Listen critically to how your favourite songs are produced.
