Composing Group Dance Pieces
Dance composition for groups involves creating movement for multiple dancers working together. The choreographer considers spatial formations, unison (everyone together), canon (one after another), levels, dynamics and how dancers relate to each other.
Example
Group Choreography Techniques
• Unison: all dancers move together (powerful, unified)
• Canon: dancers perform the same move one after another (like a Mexican wave)
• Contact: dancers touch or support each other
• Contrast: some dancers do opposite movements
• Accumulation: add one move at a time (1, then 1-2, then 1-2-3)
Formation changes: lines → circle → scattered → pairs → V-shape
Note
Remember
Effective group choreography uses variety — mix unison with solo moments, fast with slow, high with low. Tell a story or express an emotion through movement. Consider your audience — where will they watch from? Make sure every position is visible.

UnisonAll dancers performing the same movement at the same time
CanonThe same movement performed one after another (like a round)
