Drama Exploring Social Issues
Theatre has always been used to explore and comment on social problems. In SA, theatre addressed apartheid, poverty, gender violence, HIV/AIDS and xenophobia. Drama can raise awareness, create empathy and inspire change. It gives voice to the voiceless.
Example
Social Issue Theatre in SA
Historical: Athol Fugard's plays about apartheid (Sizwe Banzi Is Dead)
Health: drama educating about HIV/AIDS
Gender: plays about domestic violence and women's rights
Youth: theatre addressing bullying, peer pressure, substance abuse
Techniques: Forum Theatre (audience can change the ending), verbatim theatre (using real people's words)
Note
Remember
Drama about social issues must be respectful and responsible — never exploit real people's suffering for entertainment. Research properly, consult affected communities and aim to educate rather than sensationalise. Theatre can be a force for positive social change.
