Read and analyse poems, identify poetic devices

Reading and Analysing Poetry

Poetry uses language in creative and concentrated ways. When analysing a poem, identify the speaker (who is talking), the subject (what it is about), the mood (feeling), and the theme (message). Look for poetic devices that create effects.
Example

Poetic Devices

Rhyme: words with the same ending sound (moon/June) Rhythm: the beat or pattern of stressed syllables Imagery: language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, touch) Simile: comparison using 'like' or 'as' Metaphor: direct comparison without 'like' or 'as' Onomatopoeia: words that imitate sounds (buzz, crash, whisper)
Note

How to Approach a Poem

1. Read the poem at least three times. 2. Identify the speaker and subject. 3. Look for poetic devices and explain their effect. 4. Consider the mood and tone. 5. State the theme in your own words. 6. Always quote from the poem to support your answers.
