Read and analyse poems, identify poetic devices
Reading and Analysing Poetry
Poetry uses language in creative and concentrated ways. When analysing a poem, identify the speaker (who is talking), the subject (what it is about), the mood (feeling), and the theme (message). Look for poetic devices that create effects.
Example
Poetic Devices
Rhyme: words with the same ending sound (moon/June)
Rhythm: the beat or pattern of stressed syllables
Imagery: language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, touch)
Simile: comparison using 'like' or 'as'
Metaphor: direct comparison without 'like' or 'as'
Onomatopoeia: words that imitate sounds (buzz, crash, whisper)
