Transactional Writing

Transactional texts are practical texts written for a specific purpose and audience. In Grade 7, you learn to write friendly letters, diary entries, and dialogues. Each has a specific format that you must follow.

Friendly Letter Format

Your address (top right) Date Dear [Name], Paragraph 1: Greeting and reason for writing. Paragraph 2: Main content — news, details, or a request. Paragraph 3: Closing thoughts. Yours sincerely / Kind regards, [Your name]

Diary Entry Format

Date: Monday, 14 March 2026 Dear Diary, Today was... [Write in first person. Share your feelings and thoughts. Use informal language. Reflect on what happened and how it made you feel.] Until tomorrow, [Your name]

Key Points

Always follow the correct format — marks are awarded for it. Use the appropriate tone: friendly for a personal letter, reflective for a diary. In dialogues, use speech marks and start a new line for each speaker. Label who is speaking.
