Mains electricity, safety, saving energy

Mains Electricity

Mains electricity comes from power stations (mostly coal in SA via Eskom) and travels through power lines to homes and businesses. It is much more powerful (and dangerous) than battery electricity. We must use it safely and save energy to reduce load shedding.
Example

Saving Electricity at Home

• Switch off lights when leaving a room • Use energy-saving LED bulbs • Unplug chargers when not in use • Use a solar geyser to heat water • Iron clothes in batches, not one at a time Eskom uses about 80% coal → pollution + climate change
Note

Remember

DANGER: Never touch exposed wires, play near pylons, or use electrical devices near water. Electricity can kill! South Africa is moving toward renewable energy (solar and wind farms) to reduce pollution and load shedding.

Key Vocabulary
