Food Groups and Nutrients
Our bodies need different nutrients from food: carbohydrates for energy, proteins for growth and repair, fats for energy storage and warmth, vitamins and minerals for health, and water for all body processes. A balanced diet includes all food groups.
Example
Food Groups in SA
• Carbohydrates (energy): pap, bread, rice, potatoes
• Proteins (growth): meat, fish, beans, eggs, lentils
• Fats: oil, butter, avocado, nuts
• Vitamins & minerals: fruit, vegetables
• Water: at least 6-8 glasses per day
A balanced plate: ½ vegetables, ¼ starch, ¼ protein
Note
Remember
Read food labels to check what is in processed food. Too much sugar, salt and fat can cause health problems. In SA, many children suffer from malnutrition — a balanced diet is essential for learning and growing.
