Create simple musical compositions

Creating Simple Compositions

Composition means creating your own piece of music. You choose notes (melody), rhythm patterns, dynamics (loud/soft) and structure. A simple composition might have an A section (main tune), a B section (different tune) and then return to A (ABA form).
Example

Compose a Short Piece

Step 1: Choose 5 notes (e.g., C D E G A — pentatonic scale) Step 2: Create a 4-beat rhythm pattern Step 3: Put notes with your rhythm for Section A Step 4: Create a different Section B (new notes/rhythm) Step 5: Repeat Section A to end Structure: A (4 bars) - B (4 bars) - A (4 bars)
Note

Remember

Anyone can compose! Start simple and build up. Repetition makes music memorable — repeat your best ideas. Contrast keeps music interesting — change something (louder/softer, faster/slower, higher/lower). Many great SA songs use just a few notes but powerful rhythms.

Key Vocabulary

CompositionA piece of music that someone has created
MelodyThe main tune of a piece of music
DynamicsHow loud or soft music is played
StructureHow sections of music are organised (e.g., ABA)
