Dance Choreography

Create and perform a dance sequence

Creating a Dance Sequence

Choreography is the art of designing dance movements. A choreographer plans the steps, formations, timing and expression. Creating choreography involves choosing movements, putting them in order, deciding on spacing and matching them to music.
Example

Choreography Steps

Create a 32-count dance: • Counts 1-8: Walk forward with arm movements • Counts 9-16: Turn and jump (repeat pattern) • Counts 17-24: Floor work or level change • Counts 25-32: Return to starting position with finale pose Formations: lines, circles, V-shape, scattered, pairs
Note

Remember

Good choreography uses variety (different levels, speeds, directions), repetition (so the audience remembers patterns), contrast (slow then fast, high then low) and clear beginning and ending. Count your beats carefully and practise until movements are smooth.

Key Vocabulary

ChoreographyThe planned sequence of steps and movements in a dance
FormationThe arrangement of dancers in space (line, circle, etc.)
CountsBeats of music used to time dance movements
