Mixed Media Art
Combine different materials in artwork
Mixed Media Art
Mixed media means combining different materials and techniques in one artwork. You might use paint, paper, fabric, string, found objects, newspaper and photographs all in one piece. This creates interesting textures and layers. Mixed media encourages creativity and experimentation.
Example
Mixed Media Project
Create a self-portrait collage:
1. Draw basic face shape on cardboard
2. Add magazine cut-outs for background
3. Use fabric scraps for clothing
4. Paint or draw facial features
5. Add texture with string, buttons or beads
6. Include words or symbols that represent you
Materials: anything goes — newspaper, leaves, foil, fabric, paint!
Note
Remember
Mixed media is about experimentation — try combining materials you wouldn't normally put together. SA artist Willie Bester creates powerful mixed media artworks using found objects (scrap metal, wire, tin) to comment on South African life and history.
