Colonisation of the Cape

The arrival of Europeans at the Cape

Europeans Arrive at the Cape

In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established a refreshment station at the Cape for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Ships travelling between Europe and Asia stopped for fresh food and water. The Dutch settlers soon expanded, taking land from the Khoikhoi people.
