Using scale, grid references and keys

Maps: Scale and Grid References

Maps are drawn smaller than real life using a scale. Scale tells us how distances on the map relate to real distances. Grid references help us find exact locations using numbered lines.
Example

Using Scale and Grid

If the scale is 1:50 000, then 1 cm on the map = 500 m in real life. Measure 3 cm on the map: 3 × 500 m = 1 500 m = 1.5 km Grid reference: Read along the bottom first (easting), then up the side (northing). Position at (34, 56) means: go to line 34 along, then up to line 56.
Note

Remember

When reading grid references: 'Along the corridor, up the stairs' (eastings first, then northings). Always check the scale and key before reading a map.

Key Vocabulary

ScaleThe ratio between distance on a map and distance in real life
Grid referenceNumbers used to pinpoint a location on a map
EastingGrid lines numbered along the bottom of a map
NorthingGrid lines numbered up the side of a map
