Area of Rectangles
Calculate the area of rectangles and squares
Area of Rectangles and Squares
Area = length × width. This formula works for any rectangle or square. We measure area in square units (cm², m²). A square is a special rectangle where length equals width.
Example
Calculating Area
A rectangle: length = 8 cm, width = 5 cm
Area = 8 × 5 = 40 cm²
A square: side = 6 m
Area = 6 × 6 = 36 m²
Example
Word Problem
A classroom floor is 10 m long and 7 m wide.
Area = 10 × 7 = 70 m²
If each floor tile covers 1 m², you need 70 tiles to cover the floor.
Note
Remember
Area is always in square units (cm², m²). Don't confuse area (space inside) with perimeter (distance around the outside). Perimeter = 2 × length + 2 × width.
