Understanding Decimals

A decimal fraction uses a decimal point to show parts less than one whole. The digit after the point shows tenths, and the next digit shows hundredths. For example, 0.5 = 5 tenths = 1/2.
Example

Decimals and Fractions

0.1 = 1/10 (one tenth) 0.5 = 5/10 = 1/2 (five tenths) 0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4 (twenty-five hundredths) 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4 1.5 = 1 and 5/10 = one and a half
Example

Ordering Decimals

Order from smallest to largest: 0.8, 0.35, 0.6 Convert to same place: 0.80, 0.35, 0.60 Compare: 35 < 60 < 80 Answer: 0.35, 0.6, 0.8
Note

Remember

The decimal point separates the whole number from the fraction part. Tenths come first (1 digit after point), then hundredths (2 digits). Adding a zero at the end doesn't change the value: 0.5 = 0.50.
