Transport: Past & Present

How transport has changed over time

Transport Through Time

Transport is how people and goods move from place to place. Long ago, people walked or used animals. Then came sailing ships, steam trains, cars, aeroplanes and modern high-speed transport. Each invention made travel faster.
Example

SA Transport Timeline

• Before 1800s: Walking, ox wagons, horses, canoes • 1860: First railway built in Durban • 1900s: Cars arrived in South Africa • 1934: SA Airways started flying • 2010: Gautrain high-speed rail opened • Today: Taxis, buses, trains, cars, planes
Note

Remember

Transport changed how people lived — they could travel further, trade goods and move to new places. In South Africa, minibus taxis are the most-used form of public transport.
