Reading simple maps, directions and symbols

Reading Simple Maps

A map is a flat drawing of an area seen from above (bird's eye view). Maps use symbols (small pictures) to show features like roads, buildings, rivers and mountains. A key (legend) explains what each symbol means.

Using a Map

Map features: • Title: tells you what the map shows • Key/Legend: explains the symbols • Compass rose: shows N, S, E, W directions • Scale: tells how distances on the map relate to real distances Directions: North (up), South (down), East (right), West (left)
Note

Remember

Never Eat Soggy Weetbix — North, East, South, West (going clockwise). Maps always have North at the top unless stated otherwise.
