Why Spelling Matters

Good spelling helps people understand our writing. English has rules that help us spell correctly. Learning these rules and practising regularly makes spelling easier.
Example

Useful Spelling Rules

• 'i' before 'e' except after 'c': believe, receive • Drop the 'e' when adding -ing: make → making, ride → riding • Double the last letter for short vowel words: run → running, sit → sitting • Change 'y' to 'i' and add -es: baby → babies, fly → flies

Building Your Vocabulary

Learn new words from your reading. Use a dictionary to check meanings. Keep a personal word bank — a notebook where you write new words and their meanings. Try to use new words in your writing and speaking.
Note

Study Tips

Look at the word, say it, cover it, write it, check it (LSCWC method). Break big words into syllables: beau-ti-ful. Use the word in a sentence to remember it.
