Parts of Speech
Words in English belong to different groups called parts of speech. The main ones are: nouns (naming words), verbs (doing words), adjectives (describing words), adverbs (words that tell us how) and pronouns (words that replace nouns).

'The tall giraffe runs quickly across the savanna.'

• Verb: runs

Pronouns
Pronouns take the place of nouns so we don't repeat them. Instead of saying 'Lerato likes Lerato's dog', we say 'Lerato likes her dog.' Common pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
Note
Remember
Every sentence needs at least a noun (or pronoun) and a verb. Adjectives make writing more interesting by adding detail. Adverbs often end in '-ly' (e.g. slowly, happily, carefully).
