Reading & Comprehension

Read various texts and answer comprehension questions

What is Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension means understanding what you read. It is not enough to say the words — you must think about what they mean. Good readers ask themselves questions while they read.

Types of Questions

There are different kinds of comprehension questions: • Literal questions — the answer is right there in the text. • Inferential questions — you must think and work out the answer from clues. • Evaluative questions — you give your own opinion about the text.
Example

Practice Passage

Read: 'Thabo woke up early on Saturday. He packed his cricket bat, a sandwich and a bottle of water. He was excited because his team was playing in the finals at Wanderers Stadium.' Literal: What did Thabo pack? (bat, sandwich, water) Inferential: Where was Thabo going? (to a cricket match) Evaluative: Do you think Thabo's team will win? Why?
Note

Reading Tips

Read the text twice: once quickly for the main idea, then slowly for details. Underline key words. Look at headings and pictures before you read. Always answer in full sentences.
