Reading Maps and Following Directions

A map is a drawing that shows what a place looks like from above. Maps help us find where things are. The four main directions are North, South, East, and West. We use symbols and a key to read a map.
Example

Using a Simple Map

Imagine a map of your school: the gate is at the bottom (South). The playground is to the right (East). The office is at the top (North). To get from the gate to the playground, walk straight then turn right.

Remember

An easy way to remember directions is: Never Eat Soggy Weetbix — North, East, South, West, going clockwise around a compass.
