Explore South African heritage and cultural diversity

Our Heritage and Cultures

Heritage is everything passed down from our families and ancestors — our language, food, music, stories, and traditions. South Africa has many different cultural groups, and each one has its own special heritage. We celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September.
Example

Cultural Traditions in South Africa

Zulu culture: the Reed Dance ceremony and beadwork. Xhosa culture: traditional initiation and amasi. Afrikaans culture: potjiekos and volkspele. Indian culture: Diwali celebrations and curry dishes. Many cultures enjoy braaiing together on Heritage Day!
Note

Remember

Respecting other people's cultures helps us live together peacefully. We can learn from each other's traditions and celebrate our diversity.
