Symmetry
Identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes
What is Symmetry? 🦋
A shape has symmetry when one half is a mirror image of the other half. If you fold the shape along the line of symmetry, both sides match perfectly!
Example
Symmetry in Nature
🦋 A butterfly — fold down the middle, both wings match!
🌸 A flower — many lines of symmetry
😊 Your face — left side looks like right side
🍂 A leaf — fold along the middle line
Example
Symmetry in Shapes
A square has 4 lines of symmetry ⬜
A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry
A circle has many lines of symmetry ⭕
A triangle can have 1, 2 or 3 lines of symmetry 🔺
Note
Remember 💡
The line of symmetry is like a mirror line. Hold a mirror along the line — what you see should match the other side. Not all shapes have symmetry!
Key Vocabulary
SymmetryWhen both halves of a shape match exactly
Line of symmetryThe line where you fold to make both sides the same
Mirror imageA reflection that looks the same but flipped
FoldTo bend something so one part lies on top of the other
