Recognize and use halves and quarters
Halves and Quarters 🍕
A half means cutting something into 2 equal parts. A quarter means cutting something into 4 equal parts. The parts must be the same size!
Example
Sharing Equally
A pizza cut into 2 equal slices: each slice is a half (½) 🍕
A pizza cut into 4 equal slices: each slice is a quarter (¼) 🍕
½ of 8 sweets = 4 sweets (split into 2 groups)
¼ of 8 sweets = 2 sweets (split into 4 groups)
Example
Shapes and Fractions
Colour half of a rectangle: colour 1 of the 2 equal parts.
Colour a quarter of a circle: colour 1 of the 4 equal parts.
Two quarters (2/4) is the same as one half (½)!
Note
Remember 💡
Equal parts means the pieces are the same size. If the parts are not the same size, they are NOT halves or quarters!
