Money Problems
Solve problems involving South African coins and notes
Working with Money 💰
In South Africa, we use rands (R) and cents (c). There are 100 cents in 1 rand. We use coins and notes to buy things. We need to add up money and calculate change.
Example
Adding Money
You have R5 + R2 + R1 = R8
A sweet costs R3. A chips costs R5.
Total: R3 + R5 = R8
Coins: 50c + 20c + 20c + 10c = 100c = R1 🪙
Example
Calculating Change
You buy a pencil for R4. You pay with R10.
Change = R10 − R4 = R6 💵
You buy a book for R15. You pay with R20.
Change = R20 − R15 = R5
Note
Remember 💡
Always check your change! Add the cost and the change — it should equal what you paid. 100 cents = 1 rand.
