Phonics: Blends & Digraphs

Recognize and use consonant blends and digraphs

Blends and Digraphs

A blend is when two consonant sounds are said together, like 'bl' in blue or 'st' in star. A digraph is when two letters make one new sound, like 'sh' in ship or 'ch' in chair. 🔤
Example

Common Blends and Digraphs

Blends: bl (black), br (brown), cl (clap), st (stop), tr (tree) 🌳 Digraphs: sh (ship 🚢), ch (cheese 🧀), th (think 🤔), wh (whale 🐋) Blends = you hear both sounds. Digraphs = one new sound!
Note

Tip

When you see two consonants together at the start of a word, try blending them. If they make one special sound (like 'sh'), it's a digraph. Practise with word lists! 📝
