Comprehensive Exam Revision
The NSC Home Language examination consists of three papers:
• Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks): Comprehension, summary, language.
• Paper 2 (2 hours, 80 marks): Literature — novel, drama, poetry.
• Paper 3 (2.5 hours, 100 marks): Creative writing and transactional writing.
A strategic revision plan covering all three papers is essential for success.
Example
4-Week Revision Plan
Week 1: Paper 1 focus — complete 3 past comprehension papers, revise all grammar rules, practise 5 summaries.
Week 2: Paper 2 focus — revise novel and drama notes, write 2 essays, analyse all set poems.
Week 3: Paper 3 focus — write 3 timed essays (different types), practise 2 transactional texts.
Week 4: Integration — complete 1 full past paper for each paper under strict timed conditions. Review errors.
Daily: 15 minutes on vocabulary and 15 minutes reviewing literature quotes.
Note
Exam Day Tips
Read all questions before writing. Plan essays before writing them. Allocate time per section based on marks. Write neatly — illegible work cannot be marked. Use correct numbering that matches the question paper. Never leave a question blank. For literature, always quote from the text. Check your work before handing in.
