Advanced narrative, reflective and discursive essays

Advanced Creative Writing

Paper 3 requires you to write an essay (narrative, reflective, descriptive, or discursive) of 250–300 words in Section A and a transactional text in Section B. The essay carries 50 marks and is the single highest-weighted task. Excellence in Paper 3 can significantly boost your overall mark.
Example

Discursive Essay Approach

A discursive essay explores both sides of a topic before reaching a balanced conclusion. Topic: 'Social media has made the world a better place. Discuss.' Paragraph 1: Introduction — define the issue and preview both sides. Paragraph 2: Arguments FOR (global connectivity, access to information, social movements). Paragraph 3: Arguments AGAINST (misinformation, mental health, privacy concerns). Paragraph 4: Your balanced position based on the evidence. Conclusion: A nuanced final statement.
Note

Top-Mark Strategies

For exceptional creative writing: • Plan for 5 minutes — a mind map or brief outline saves time. • Start with a compelling opening — avoid clichés like 'It was a dark and stormy night.' • Use a range of literary devices naturally. • Vary sentence length for rhythm and effect. • End memorably — a twist, a reflection, or an image that lingers. • Proofread for 5 minutes — spelling and grammar errors cost marks.
