Paper 1: Comprehension, Summary, and Language
Paper 1 is a 2-hour exam worth 80 marks. It consists of three sections:
• Section A: Comprehension (30 marks) — reading and answering questions on a text.
• Section B: Summary (10 marks) — condensing a text to 90 words with 7 main points.
• Section C: Language structures and conventions (30 marks) — grammar, editing, visual literacy.

Comprehension Question Breakdown
Literal (knowledge): 'According to the passage, what is the main cause of...?' — Find directly in the text.
Reorganisation: 'Summarise the writer's three arguments.' — Gather info from different parts.
Inference: 'What does the writer imply by...?' — Read between the lines.
Evaluation: 'Do you agree with the writer? Motivate your answer.' — Personal response with text support.
Appreciation: 'Comment on the effectiveness of the title.' — Evaluate the writer's choices.

Time Allocation Strategy
Section A (30 marks): 50 minutes
Section B (10 marks): 20 minutes
Section C (30 marks): 40 minutes
Review: 10 minutes
For Section C, know these thoroughly: active/passive voice, direct/indirect speech, sentence types, parts of speech, figures of speech, concord, tenses, editing conventions, and visual literacy analysis.
