Revising Comprehension and Summary
Paper 1 of the Home Language exam tests comprehension (Section A), summary writing (Section B), and language structures and conventions (Section C). Comprehensive revision of all three sections is essential. Focus on higher-order questions that require critical and evaluative thinking.
Example
Higher-Order Comprehension
Text: An opinion piece arguing that technology is eroding human connection.
Q: 'Do you agree with the writer's view that technology is destroying relationships? Justify your response.' (3 marks)
Approach:
1. State your position clearly: 'I partially agree / disagree because...'
2. Give at least two reasons with evidence.
3. Reference the text and your own knowledge.
This is an evaluative question — your opinion is assessed, but only if well-supported.
Note
Summary Writing Technique
The summary typically requires identifying 7 points from a text and presenting them in a single paragraph of no more than 90 words.
• Number your points in the margin as you identify them.
• Rephrase in your own words — do not copy sentences.
• Do not include examples, repetitions, or your own opinions.
• Count your words carefully — exceeding the limit loses marks.
• Write neatly in continuous prose (not bullet points).
