Research-Based Speeches

In Grade 11, prepared speeches must be well-researched, logically structured, and delivered with confidence. You are expected to select a relevant and engaging topic, gather information from credible sources, and present a compelling argument or informative presentation supported by visual aids.

Speech Preparation Process

Topic: 'The impact of load shedding on South African education' 1. Research: Stats from DBE, news articles, personal experiences. 2. Structure: Hook → thesis → 3 main points with evidence → conclusion with call to action. 3. Visual aid: PowerPoint slide or poster with key statistics. 4. Practice: Time yourself (4–5 minutes). Record and review. 5. Delivery: Speak from cue cards, not a full script. Maintain eye contact.

You will be assessed on: • Research quality and depth • Logical structure and coherence • Use of evidence and examples • Delivery: confidence, eye contact, pace, volume, gestures • Use of visual aids • Audience engagement • Time management (staying within the time limit) Practise your speech at least five times before presenting.
