Analysing Short Stories

Short stories are compact narratives that focus on a single event, conflict, or moment of change. When analysing a short story, examine the plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution), characters, setting, themes, and the author's use of language.
Example

Plot Structure

Exposition: Introduction of characters and setting. Rising action: Events that build tension and develop the conflict. Climax: The turning point — the moment of highest tension. Falling action: Events after the climax leading towards resolution. Resolution: The conflict is resolved; the story reaches its conclusion. Some stories have an open ending — the reader must decide what happens.
Note

Literary Analysis Tips

Pay attention to the title — it often hints at the theme. Consider the narrator: is the story in first or third person? Why? Examine how the author uses setting to create mood. Look for foreshadowing — clues about what will happen. Always use the PEE method (Point, Evidence, Explanation).

Key Vocabulary

ExpositionThe introduction of a story where characters and setting are established
ClimaxThe turning point or most intense moment in a story
ForeshadowingHints or clues about events that will happen later in the story
ResolutionThe part of the story where the conflict is resolved
