Identity & Self-Image
Understanding Identity
Your identity is shaped by many factors: your family, culture, language, values, experiences, and personal choices. Self-image is how you see yourself — your body, abilities, and personality. During adolescence, your identity develops as you explore who you are.
Example
Factors That Shape Identity
Culture and traditions passed down by your family. Languages you speak — South Africa has 11 official languages. Your talents and interests — sport, art, academics. Your values — honesty, kindness, ambition. Be careful that unrealistic social media images do not distort your self-image.
Note
Remember
A healthy self-image is not about being perfect. Accept your strengths and weaknesses. Avoid comparing yourself to filtered images on social media — they do not reflect reality.
