Effective Study Methods

Studying is not just reading — it is actively engaging with information so you understand and remember it. Different methods work for different learners. The key is to find what works best for YOU and practise it consistently.

Study Techniques

• Summarising: write key points in your own words • Mind maps: use diagrams to connect ideas visually • Flashcards: write a question on one side, the answer on the other • Teaching others: explain a topic to a friend — if you can teach it, you know it • Past papers: practise answering exam-style questions under timed conditions • SQ3R method: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review
Example

Creating a Study Timetable

Monday: Maths (45 min) + English (30 min) Tuesday: Natural Sciences (45 min) + Life Orientation (20 min) Wednesday: Social Sciences (45 min) + revision of Monday's work Thursday: Technology (30 min) + Maths (30 min) Friday: Review the week's work + make flashcards Take a 10-minute break every 45 minutes. Study in a quiet, well-lit place.
Note

Exam Preparation Tips

Start studying at least 2 weeks before exams — don't cram! Sleep well the night before (your brain consolidates memories during sleep). Eat breakfast on exam day. Read each question carefully. Manage your time — don't spend too long on one question.
