Exploring Careers

It is never too early to start thinking about what you want to be one day! Career exploration helps you discover your interests, match them to possible careers and understand what qualifications you might need. In South Africa, career choices are linked to your subject choices from Grade 10.

Matching Interests to Careers

• Love science? → Doctor, engineer, environmental scientist • Enjoy helping people? → Social worker, teacher, nurse • Creative? → Graphic designer, architect, filmmaker • Good with numbers? → Accountant, data analyst, actuary • Enjoy working outdoors? → Game ranger, farmer, marine biologist • Love technology? → Software developer, IT technician, robotics engineer
Example

Career Research Activity

Choose one career and find out: 1. What does this person do daily? 2. What subjects must I take in Grade 10–12? 3. What qualifications do I need? (diploma, degree, trade) 4. Where can I study? (university, TVET college, learnership) 5. What is the average salary in South Africa? 6. Is there demand for this career?
Note

Remember

There is no single 'right' career. Your interests may change — that's normal! Focus on doing your best in all subjects now, so you keep your options open. TVET colleges offer excellent practical qualifications alongside university degrees.
