Interpreting Visual Texts

Visual literacy involves interpreting and evaluating visual texts such as cartoons, posters, advertisements, and photographs. You need to analyse the visual and verbal elements, identify the message, and explain the techniques used by the creator.
Example

Analysing a Cartoon

A cartoon shows a learner buried under a pile of textbooks with a speech bubble saying 'Help!' Visual elements: exaggerated pile of books, small learner, desperate expression. Verbal element: 'Help!' (speech bubble). Message: Learners are overwhelmed by too much schoolwork. Technique: exaggeration (hyperbole) to make the point humorous but serious.
Note

What to Look For

In visual texts, always examine: • The images (size, colour, facial expressions, body language) • The text (headings, captions, speech bubbles, slogans) • The layout (what is placed where and why) • The purpose (to inform, persuade, or entertain) • The target audience
