Read and discuss a prescribed novel

Studying a Novel

A novel is a long fictional text with characters, a setting, a plot, themes, and a writing style. When studying a novel, we examine how the author creates characters, develops conflict, and conveys messages. We also explore how the setting and context influence the story.

Key Elements to Analyse

Characters: Who are the main and minor characters? How do they change? Setting: Where and when does the story take place? How does it affect events? Plot: What is the main conflict? What are the key events? How is the conflict resolved? Theme: What message or lesson does the author convey?
Example

Character Analysis

When analysing a character, consider: • What the character says (dialogue) • What the character does (actions) • What others say about the character • How the character changes from beginning to end Example: 'At first, Thembi was shy and afraid. By the end, she stood up for herself — showing her growth and bravery.'
Note

Study Tips

Keep a reading journal as you read — note important events, character changes, and interesting quotes. This makes revision much easier. Always support your answers with evidence (quotes) from the novel.
