Democracy & Voting

Understand democratic principles and the importance of voting

Understanding Democracy

Democracy means 'government by the people.' In a democracy, citizens vote to choose their leaders. South Africa became a democracy in 1994 when all citizens could vote for the first time. The Constitution is the highest law and protects everyone's rights.
Example

Democracy in South Africa

South Africans vote in national, provincial, and local elections. The President is the head of state. Parliament makes laws. The Constitutional Court ensures laws are fair. Even at school, you practise democracy when you vote for class representatives.
Note

Remember

Democracy only works when people participate. When you are old enough to vote, use your right — many South Africans fought and sacrificed for the freedom to vote.
