Advanced Comprehension
Analyse and evaluate texts critically
Advanced Comprehension
In Grade 6, comprehension goes beyond finding facts. You must analyse and evaluate texts — this means looking deeper to understand the writer's purpose, identify bias, distinguish between fact and opinion, and draw conclusions from evidence in the text.
Example
Levels of Questions
Literal (find in the text): 'What did the character eat for breakfast?'
Inferential (work it out): 'Why do you think the character was sad?' — The text says she stared out the window and sighed, so we can infer she was unhappy.
Evaluative (give your opinion): 'Do you think the character made the right choice? Give a reason.'
Note
Exam Tips
Read the text twice before answering. Underline key words in the questions. For 'quote' questions, copy the exact words from the text with quotation marks. For 'own words' questions, rephrase the answer. Always check that your answer matches the number of marks.
Key Vocabulary
AnalyseTo examine something carefully and in detail
EvaluateTo judge or form an opinion about something
BiasShowing favour to one side, not being fair or balanced
InferenceA conclusion you reach based on clues in the text
