Slavery at the Cape
The slave trade and its impact
Slavery at the Cape
From 1658, enslaved people were brought to the Cape from East Africa, Madagascar, India, Indonesia and Malaysia. They were forced to work on farms and in homes. Slavery was cruel — people were treated as property and families were separated.
Example
Life of Enslaved People
• Worked from sunrise to sunset with no pay
• Could be bought and sold
• Were punished harshly for disobeying
• Brought their cultures: Muslim faith, cooking (bobotie), building styles
• Slavery ended at the Cape in 1838
Note
Remember
Slavery is one of the greatest injustices in history. The enslaved people contributed enormously to SA culture — food, language (many Afrikaans words), religion and architecture. We must never forget this history.
