Read and interpret pie charts

Reading Pie Charts

A pie chart is a circle divided into slices. Each slice shows a part of the whole. Bigger slices mean bigger portions. All slices together make up the whole (100%).
Example

Interpreting a Pie Chart

How learners get to school: • Walk: half the pie (50%) • Bus: quarter of the pie (25%) • Car: quarter of the pie (25%) If there are 40 learners: Walk = 50% of 40 = 20 learners Bus = 25% of 40 = 10 learners Car = 25% of 40 = 10 learners
Example

Comparing Slices

The biggest slice shows the most popular category. If the Walk slice is biggest, most learners walk to school. You can compare slices without knowing exact numbers.
Note

Remember

All slices must add up to the whole (100%). A pie chart shows parts of a group. Use fractions or percentages to describe each slice.
