Understanding Gender Equality

Gender equality means that boys and girls, men and women, should have the same rights and opportunities. It means everyone can choose what they want to study, which sports to play, and what career to follow.
Example

Challenging Stereotypes

Stereotype: 'Only boys can play soccer.' Reality: Banyana Banyana is South Africa's women's national team. Stereotype: 'Cooking is only for girls.' Reality: Some of the world's best chefs are men. Everyone should be free to follow their interests.
Note

Remember

The South African Constitution guarantees equality for all. When you treat everyone fairly regardless of gender, you help build a better society.

Key Vocabulary

Gender equalityWhen all people have the same rights regardless of gender
StereotypeAn unfair, fixed idea about a group of people
FairnessTreating everyone equally and justly
