Comprehension Strategies
Apply comprehension strategies to various text types
Comprehension Strategies
Comprehension strategies are tools that help you understand different types of texts. These include predicting (guessing what will happen), visualising (making pictures in your mind), questioning (asking yourself questions while reading), and summarising (finding the most important ideas).
Example
Applying Strategies
Read this paragraph:
'The Karoo is a dry region in South Africa. Very little rain falls here. Despite this, many animals and plants have adapted to survive. The Karoo tortoise stores water in its body.'
Visualise: Picture a dry, hot landscape with tough little animals.
Question: How do animals survive with so little water?
Summarise: The Karoo is dry, but animals have adapted to live there.
Note
Before, During, After
Before reading: Look at the title and pictures — predict what the text is about.
During reading: Ask questions, make connections, and visualise.
After reading: Summarise the main idea in one or two sentences.
