Living & Non-Living Things

Distinguish between living and non-living things

Living vs Non-Living

Living things grow, breathe, move, reproduce and respond to their surroundings. Non-living things do not do these things. A dog is living — it grows, eats and breathes. A rock is non-living — it does not grow or breathe.
Example

Sorting Activity

Living: cat, tree, flower, bird, fish Non-living: chair, stone, water, pencil, glass Ask yourself: Does it grow? Does it need food or water? Does it reproduce? If YES to these, it is living.
Note

Remember

Some things were once living but are now non-living, like a wooden table (made from a tree) or a leather shoe (made from animal skin). These are called 'once-living' things.
