Energy Around Us

Sources and uses of energy in daily life

What Is Energy?

Energy is the ability to do work or make things happen. We need energy to move, to heat our food, to light our homes and to power machines. Energy comes in many forms: light, heat, sound, movement and electrical energy.
Example

Energy Sources in Daily Life

• The sun gives us light and heat energy • Food gives our bodies energy to move and grow • Electricity powers lights, TVs and fridges • Petrol gives cars energy to move • Wood or coal burned for cooking gives heat energy
Note

Remember

Energy cannot be created or destroyed — it can only change from one form to another. When you switch on a light, electrical energy changes to light energy (and some heat energy).
