Example
Breaking Down Numbers
4 269:
4 000 (4 thousands)
+ 200 (2 hundreds)
+ 60 (6 tens)
+ 9 (9 ones)
= 4 269
Expanded form: 4 000 + 200 + 60 + 9
Comparing and Ordering
To compare numbers, start with the thousands digit. If they are the same, compare hundreds, then tens, then ones.
3 456 < 3 489 (look at the tens: 5 < 8)
7 012 > 6 998 (7 thousands > 6 thousands)
Example
Rounding
Round 3 672 to the nearest hundred:
Look at the tens digit: 7 (5 or more = round up)
3 672 → 3 700
Round 8 345 to the nearest thousand:
Look at the hundreds digit: 3 (less than 5 = round down)
8 345 → 8 000
Note
Remember
Place value is the value of each digit based on its position. When rounding, look at the digit to the RIGHT of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down.
